Senthamarai (செந்தாமரை) means the red lotus. It joins cem-, the Tamil prefix for red, to tāmarai, lotus, and the Tamil Lexicon defines the compound as the red lotus, quoting the old Tamil epic Peruṅkatai. The red or pink lotus is the flower of Lakshmi and a favourite image in Tamil poetry for a beautiful face, eyes or hands. Senthamarai is a traditional girls' name; it was also the screen name of a well-known male Tamil actor, but today it is chosen almost entirely for daughters.
