Kurinji meaning
Kurinji (குறிஞ்சி) is a Tamil girl's name.
Hill country; also the kurinji shrub (Strobilanthes) and a melody
Kurinji (குறிஞ்சி) is the Tamil kuṟiñci, a word with deep roots in classical Tamil poetry. The Tamil Lexicon gives it first as the hilly tract, one of the five landscapes of Sangam poetry, whose poetic theme is the secret union of lovers. It also names a melody-type, the Sangam poem Kuṟiñcippāṭṭu, and several plants, above all shrubs of the genus Strobilanthes, including S. kunthianus. That shrub is the neelakurinji of the Western Ghats, famous for covering whole hillsides in purplish-blue flowers in a mass bloom roughly once in twelve years. Name lists often mention that rare flowering, which gives the name a sense of something precious and long awaited.
