Vennila (வெண்ணிலா) is the spoken form of Tamil veṇṇilavu, from veṇ-, "white", and nilavu, "moonlight" or the moon. The Tamil Lexicon defines veṇṇilavu as moonlight and cites the Sangam poem Paṭṭiṉappālai, so the word is old in Tamil literature. Nilā and nilavu are equivalent forms, which is why the name ends in -ā. Tamil name lists give Vennila as moonlight or the bright white moon, which matches the dictionary, and the word is familiar from Tamil film songs such as "Vennilave Vennilave". It is a girl's name; Nila, "moon", is a shorter relative, and the Telugu name Vennela also means moonlight.
