The waxing moon
Valarmathi (வளர்மதி) means 'the growing moon'. It joins vaḷar, the Tamil verb 'to grow', with mati, which the Tamil Lexicon gives as the moon and the full moon; the Lexicon's vaḷarpiṟai, 'the waxing crescent', uses the same verb. The waxing moon, which grows a little brighter every night, is an old Tamil image of increase and promise. Valarmathi is a Tamil girls' name, borne by several Tamil Nadu politicians and by N. Valarmathi, the ISRO scientist who led the RISAT-1 satellite project.
