Ayaz (ایاز) is an old name in the Persian-speaking world, made famous by Malik Ayāz, the Turkic slave who rose to be the trusted favourite and officer of Sultan Maḥmūd of Ghazni in the eleventh century. Persian poets, Rumi among them, told stories of his loyalty to Maḥmūd. Steingass's dictionary records Āyāz only as a personal name and gives no meaning. Name lists today give it as "cool breeze" or "night breeze", usually explained from Turkic, but we could not confirm this in the dictionaries we checked.
