Devoted to the gods, pious; birth name of Bhishma
Also used to mean: vow of God, devoted to God
Devavrat (देवव्रत) is the Sanskrit deva-vrata, from deva, "god", and vrata, "a vow, a religious observance". Monier-Williams gives it as a religious vow of any kind, as the adjective "devoted to the gods, pious", and as a name of Bhīṣma and of the war god Skanda. In the Mahabharata, Devavrata is the name Bhīṣma was born with; he became Bhīṣma, "the one of the terrible vow", after renouncing the throne and marriage for his father's sake. Indian name lists give "vow of God" or "devoted to God". In Bengal the same name is Debabrata.
