Omkar meaning
Omkar (ओंकार) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, ओ, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Rohini nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The sacred syllable om, or its utterance; an auspicious beginning
Omkar (ओंकार) is Sanskrit oṃ-kāra, the syllable Om itself or the act of uttering it, with kāra, the ending used to name a sound. Monier-Williams cites it from the laws of Manu and the Bhagavad Gītā; in Gītā 9.17 Krishna counts himself as the purifier and the oṃkāra among his forms. The word can also mean an auspicious beginning. MW also lists Oṃkāra as a Śiva liṅga: the Omkareshwar temple, one of the twelve jyotirliṅgas, stands on Mandhata island in the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh, whose outline is said to resemble the written Om. Name lists give Omkar as "the sound of Om" or "the sacred sound", in line with the dictionary.
