Diya meaning
Diya (दिया) is a Hindu girl's name of Hindi origin.
A light, a lamp
Diya (दिया) is the everyday Hindi word for a small oil lamp, the clay or brass lamp lit in worship and in rows at Diwali. Platts's Hindi dictionary derives it, through Prakrit forms, from Sanskrit dīpaka, which Monier-Williams glosses as "a light, lamp"; the same root gives Deepak and Deepika. Platts lists everyday phrases with it, such as diyā-bātī karnā, to prepare the lights or light the lamp. Baby-name lists agree on "lamp" or "light". Platts also records an unrelated diyā meaning "given; a gift", the past form of denā, "to give", but that is not the sense behind the name. Some sites link Diya to an Arabic word for brightness; for an Indian name, the Hindi lamp word is the clear source.
