Dorcas meaning
Dorcas is a Christian girl's name of Greek origin.
Gazelle
Dorcas is the Greek word for a gazelle. In Acts 9:36 it is the Greek rendering of Tabitha, the Aramaic name of a woman at Joppa who was 'full of good works and acts of charity', especially making clothes for widows. When she died, Peter was called and raised her to life. Her example gave rise to Dorcas societies, church groups that sewed for the poor, and the name has been used by Christian families in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Northeast.
