Gabriella is the Italian feminine of Gabriel, the archangel who in the Gospel of Luke announces the birth of Jesus to Mary. Strong's concordance gives the Hebrew Gavriʾel as "man of God", from geber, "man", and ʾel, "God"; the Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon says the same. Name lists usually give "God is my strength", because geber comes from a verb meaning to be strong, but the dictionaries translate the name as "man of God". The Spanish form Gabriela was the pen name of the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. It shortens to Gabby or Ella.
