We haven't confirmed a dictionary meaning for the name itself. The meaning above is how families commonly use it.
Gitali (গীতালি in Bengali, गीताली in Devanagari) is a Bengali girls' name built on Sanskrit gīta, "song". Gitali is also the title of a 1914 book of poems by Rabindranath Tagore, published a few years after Gitanjali, and the name carries that literary echo in Bengal. We did not find gītālī itself in the Sanskrit dictionaries, so we give the root rather than a dictionary meaning. Name lists give it as "song-like" or "melodious". A well-known bearer was Gitali Roy, who acted in Satyajit Ray's Mahanagar and Charulata.
