Madhuparna (মধুপর্ণা, मधुपर्णा) joins madhu, "sweet, honey", and parṇa, "leaf", so it reads literally as "sweet leaf". Monier-Williams records the feminine madhuparṇī as a name for several plants, among them Gmelina arborea, the indigo plant and the medicinal climber Cocculus cordifolius. Baby-name lists usually give the meaning as "a tulsi leaf". We could not find that sense in the dictionaries, so it appears to be a modern explanation of the name rather than an old one. Madhuparna is used mainly by Bengali families.
