Gitanjali meaning
Gitanjali (गीतांजलि) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, गी, it is a Makar rashi name (Dhanishta nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
A reverent offering of songs (gīta, song + añjali)
Gitanjali (गीतांजलि) joins two Sanskrit words. Gīta is "song", and añjali is the gesture of joined, hollowed palms raised in reverence, and also an offering held in them; Monier-Williams records both, though not the compound itself. Together they mean "an offering of songs". The word is best known as the title of Rabindranath Tagore's collection of Bengali poems published in 1910. His English prose versions, Gitanjali: Song Offerings (1912), with an introduction by W. B. Yeats, helped win him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, though the English book also draws on poems from his other collections. Baby-name lists give "offering of songs", matching its parts. The name is given to girls and is also spelt Geetanjali.
