The coral tree; one of the five trees of paradise
Also used to mean: divine tree, celestial flower
Parijat (पारिजात) is Sanskrit pārijāta, which Monier-Williams gives as the coral tree, Erythrina indica, with its crimson flowers, and as one of the five trees of paradise. In myth it rose from the churning of the ocean, was kept by Indra in his heavenly garden, and was carried off to earth by Krishna. In modern Hindi, however, pārijāt usually names a different plant, the night-flowering jasmine or harsingār (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis), whose fragrant flowers open at night. Name lists give Parijat as a "divine tree" or "celestial flower". The Nepali writer Parijat, pen name of Bishnu Kumari Waiba, whose novel Shirishko Phool won the Madan Puraskar in 1965, bore the name.
