Parul (पारुल) is the Bengali name of a flower. The Samsad Bengali dictionary defines pārul as a species of trumpet-flower or the plant that bears it; Sanskrit has the similar pāṭalā for the trumpet-flower tree, with its pale rose blossoms. The flower has a place in Bengali folklore, where in the tale of Saat Bhai Champa a little sister becomes a Parul flower beside her seven brothers turned into champa blossoms. Name lists today often give Parul as "graceful"; that sense is not in the dictionary, so it seems to be a meaning that has grown up around the name. It is used all over North India.
