Nishigandha meaning
Nishigandha (निशिगंधा) is a Hindu girl's name of Marathi origin (from Sanskrit).
The tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa)
Also used to mean: fragrance of the night
Nishigandha (निशिगंधा) is the Marathi name of the tuberose, the white flower whose scent is strongest after dark. Molesworth's Marathi dictionary lists niśigandh as the tuberose and marks it as a word of Sanskrit origin; it joins niśi, "at night", and gandha, "fragrance". The same flower is called rajanīgandhā in Hindi, which also means "night-fragrant". Name lists give Nishigandha as "fragrance of the night", which fits the word. The name is used mainly in Maharashtra, and the Marathi actress Nishigandha Wad is a well-known bearer.
