Gunjika (गुंजिका) is Sanskrit guñjikā, which Monier-Williams records from the old word lists as the berry of Abrus precatorius, the scarlet-and-black seed also called gunja. Name lists usually give Gunjika as "humming" or "a humming melody". That sense belongs to the root guñj, "to hum", which gives Gunjan and Gunjita, but the dictionary does not give it for guñjikā itself, so it appears to be a modern meaning that has grown up from the sound of the name. Both readings come from the same family of words.
