Haris (حارث) is the South Asian pronunciation of the Arabic ḥārith; in Urdu the Arabic th is spoken as s. Lane gives ḥārith as a sower, ploughman, tiller or cultivator of land, from the root ḥ-r-th, which also means to gain, earn or acquire by labour. It is an old Arabian name, and Lane's quotations mention several men called al-Ḥārith, among them Ghassanid kings. Name lists often give Haris as "guardian" or "protector". That sense belongs to a different word, ḥāris (حارس), "a guard", from the root ḥ-r-s, "to guard or keep". Families who want that meaning write the name with the letter sīn instead.
