Irene meaning
Irene is a Christian girl's name of Greek origin.
Peace; from Greek eirēnē
Irene comes from the Greek eirēnē, "peace". Strong's Concordance, which lists it as a New Testament word, gives it as peace in a literal or figurative sense and, by implication, prosperity, and suggests it comes from a verb meaning to join; it is the word of the angels' song of peace on earth at the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:14). The Greeks also personified peace as a goddess, Eirene. As a personal name it is not found in the Bible, but it was taken up early by Greek-speaking Christians. Name lists give "peace", in line with the Greek. In India the name is used in Christian families and is usually said eye-REEN.
