Janardan (जनार्दन) is Sanskrit janārdana, from jana, "people", and ardana, "stirring up, agitating". Monier-Williams translates it as "exciting or agitating men" and gives it as a name of Viṣṇu or Kṛṣṇa; in the Bhagavad Gītā Arjuna often addresses Krishna as Janārdana. Name lists usually give "one who helps people" or "protector of beings". We could not find those senses in the dictionaries, so they appear to be gentler modern readings of the epithet. The name is used across India, and is spelt Janardhan in the South.
In Hindu tradition this is a name of Vishnu.
