Janmejay (जनमेजय) is the modern form of Sanskrit Janamejaya, which Monier-Williams explains as "causing men to tremble". Its famous bearer is King Janamejaya, son of Parīkṣit and great-grandson of Arjuna, at whose snake-sacrifice the sage Vaiśampāyana recited the Mahābhārata to him. The dictionary also lists several other kings and princes of the name. Name lists often give "victorious from birth", which reads janma, "birth", and jaya, "victory", into it; that is a popular reading rather than the dictionary's. Janamejay is an alternative spelling.
