Jewel meaning
Jewel is a Christian girl's name of English origin (from Old French).
An ornament, a precious stone; figuratively, a beloved person
Also used to mean: treasure
Jewel is the English word used as a name. The Online Etymology Dictionary dates it to the late thirteenth century, from Anglo-French juel and Old French jouel, "ornament, present, gem". Its deeper source is uncertain: perhaps Medieval Latin jocale, from jocus, "pastime", or Latin gaudium, "joy", the root of English joy. By the 1300s jewel meant a precious stone and, figuratively, a dearly loved person, which is the sense parents have in mind. In Kerala it is used by Christian families, sometimes in combinations such as Jewel Mary.
