Kajal meaning
Kajal (काजल) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin (Hindi kājal). By its first sound, का, it is a Mithun rashi name (Mrigashira nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Lamp-black used as a collyrium for the eyes; kohl
Kajal (काजल) is the Hindi kājal, the soft black made from lamp soot and applied to the eyes. Platts' dictionary traces it to Sanskrit kajjala, which Monier-Williams describes as lampblack used as a collyrium, put on the eyelashes or eyelids as medicine or as an ornament. Platts records the household words around it, such as kājal pārnā, collecting the black by holding a plate over a lamp flame, and the kājal-dān, the little box that holds it. In Sanskrit kajjala could also mean a cloud. Indian name lists give Kajal as "kohl" or "eyeliner", which matches the dictionaries.
