Nadia (نادیہ) is used in two traditions that happen to sound alike. In Arabic it is linked to the root n-d-y: Lane's lexicon gives nadā as dew or moisture, and figuratively as bounty or liberality, and nidāʾ as calling out or raising the voice, which is where name lists get the gloss "caller". The popular meaning "hope" belongs to a different name, the Russian Nadia, short for Nadezhda, "hope". Indian Muslim families use Nadia in the Arabic sense, but most name lists mix the two. In Indian cinema the name is remembered through Fearless Nadia, the stunt star of the 1930s and 1940s.
