Qais (قیس) is an old Arabian personal name. Steingass's dictionary links it to the verb qāsa, "to measure one thing by another", and also records it as the name of the ancestor of the great tribe of Qays. Its fame in South Asia comes from romance: Qays ibn al-Mulawwah was the poet whose love for Layla earned him the name Majnūn, "the possessed", and Platts gives Qais simply as the name of that celebrated Arabian lover. Name lists give Qais as "firm" or "resolute"; we could not find these senses in the dictionaries, so they appear to be modern glosses.
