Ruhi meaning
Ruhi (रूही) is a Hindu and Muslim girl's name of Arabic origin (Persian and Urdu usage). By its first sound, रू, it is a Tula rashi name (Swati nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Of the soul, spiritual (from rūḥ, "soul, spirit")
Also used to mean: soulful
Ruhi (रूही, Urdu روحی) comes from Arabic rūḥ, "soul, spirit", with the ending -ī that turns a noun into an adjective, so it means "of the soul" or "spiritual". Lane's Arabic–English Lexicon gives rūḥ as the soul or vital principle, and also as breath, divine inspiration and an angelic being. The Quran uses ar-rūḥ in the verse "They ask you about the spirit" (17:85). The word reached Indian languages through Persian and Urdu, and Ruhi is now given to girls in Hindu and Muslim families alike. Some lists call it Sanskrit for "ascending"; we found no Sanskrit word ruhī with that sense.
