Kashika (काशिका) is a Sanskrit word tied to Kashi, the ancient name of Varanasi. Monier-Williams gives kāśikā as the city of the Kāśis, that is Benares, and as the title of the Kāśikā, a seventh-century commentary on Pāṇini's grammar written there; the related kāśika means "from Kashi" and also "silken", after the city's silk. Name lists usually give "the shining one" or "bright", which are not senses recorded for this word.
