Soham (सोहम) is the Sanskrit phrase so 'ham, in which sa, "he" or "that", joins aham, "I". Monier-Williams glosses the combination only as "I myself". Indian name lists read the same two words as a sentence, "I am That" or "I am He", and that reading has old roots. The Īśa Upaniṣad closes its prayer to the sun with so 'ham asmi, "that Person, I am he", and Śaṅkara's commentary takes it as the speaker's identity with the Person in the sun. So the popular meaning comes from this religious use of the phrase, which the dictionary gloss does not record. Soham is given mostly to boys and is used across India.
