Parikshit (परीक्षित) is best known as the Kuru king who was the son of Abhimanyu and grandson of Arjuna, saved in his mother Uttara's womb by Krishna and later the listener to whom the Bhagavata Purana is told. Monier-Williams traces parikṣit to pari-kṣi, "to dwell around", and the Vedic word means "spreading around". Name lists give "tested" or "examined", which follows a different word, parīkṣita; the Bhagavata Purana itself explains his name that way, saying he would examine every man for the lord he had seen before birth.
