Sumit (सुमित) is usually explained on Indian name lists as "good friend", and sometimes as "well measured". Only the second has dictionary support. Monier-Williams lists su-mita, from su-, "well", and mita, "measured", the past participle of the root mā; it also gives a second reading, "well fixed", from the root mi. Both senses are cited from the Ṛgveda. The "friend" sense would need mitra, which is a separate word, so it looks like a modern association with the sound of the name rather than its origin. Sumit is the counterpart of Amit, "unmeasured", which comes from the same root. It is also spelled Sumeet.
