Sandipan (सन्दीपन) is Sanskrit saṃdīpana, from the verb saṃ-dīp, "to kindle, set alight". Monier-Williams gives it as kindling, inflaming or arousing, and as the name of one of the five arrows of Kāma, the god of love. On name lists Sandipan is usually linked with Sāndīpani, the sage who, by the Purāṇas, taught Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. That is a closely related but separate word, so the link is a popular reading rather than the name's literal sense. Sandipan is a Bengali name, carried by the writer Sandipan Chattopadhyay.
