Agnivesh (अग्निवेश) begins with agni, "fire", and is the name of a sage. Monier-Williams records Agniveśa as the name of an ancient medical authority and of other men, rather than as an ordinary word. In tradition Agniveśa was a pupil of the sage Ātreya and one of the earliest writers on Ayurveda; his treatise was later revised by Charaka and survives as the Charaka Saṃhitā. Baby-name lists give the name as "bright as fire" or "dressed in fire"; these are modern readings of the fire element rather than dictionary senses. A well-known bearer was the social reformer Swami Agnivesh.
