Tapas meaning
Tapas (तपस) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin (Bengali usage Tāpas).
Warmth, heat; religious austerity, penance
Tapas (तपस) is the Sanskrit tapas, from the verb tap, "to be hot". Its first meaning in Monier-Williams is warmth or heat; from the Ṛg-veda on it also means religious austerity, penance and bodily discipline, the inner heat that sages build through practice. Name lists give "penance", "heat" or "austerity", all dictionary senses. The name is used in Bengal and Odisha, and in Bengali it is written Tāpas (তাপস), which is strictly Sanskrit tāpasa, "an ascetic", from the same root. Well-known bearers include the Bengali actor and politician Tapas Paul.
