Nilanjan (नीलांजन) comes from Sanskrit nīlāñjana, made of nīla, "dark blue, black", and añjana, the collyrium used to line the eyes. Monier-Williams gives the word as black antimony and as an eye ointment made with it, while the feminine nīlāñjanā means lightning. Name lists today usually translate Nilanjan as "blue" or "one with bluish eyes"; this is a looser reading of the dark-blue eye-paint sense rather than the dictionary meaning. It is a boys' name used mainly in Bengal, the counterpart of the girls' name Nilanjana.
