Tukaram (तुकाराम) is above all the name of Sant Tukaram, the seventeenth-century saint-poet from Dehu near Pune, whose abhaṅga hymns to Viṭhobā are still sung by the Vārkarī pilgrims of Maharashtra. The second part of the name is Rāma. The first part, Tukā, is not a Sanskrit word; one Sanskritist has suggested it comes from a word for "little one", so that the name would mean "little Rama", but this is a scholar's suggestion rather than settled fact. Name lists usually just give "a poet saint", describing the famous bearer. The name is chiefly used in Maharashtra.
