Utpal (उत्पल) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, उ, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The blossom of the blue lotus; any water-lily; any flower
Also used to mean: water lily
Utpal (उत्पल) is the Sanskrit utpala, which Monier-Williams gives as the blossom of the blue lotus or blue water-lily, and more loosely any water-lily or any flower. The blue utpala is one of the classic flowers of Sanskrit poetry, often compared to beautiful eyes, and the dictionary also records Utpala as the name of an astronomer and other men; the Kashmiri philosopher Utpaladeva bore a related name. Name lists give Utpal as "blue lotus" or "water lily", matching the dictionary. The name is used in Bengal, where it is sometimes written Utpol, and its best-known bearer is the actor and dramatist Utpal Dutt.
