Anay (अनय) is a modern name, and name lists usually give it as "without a superior", "one whom no one can lead" or a name of Vishnu, while others say "unique". In Monier-Williams the spelling anaya belongs to two different words, and neither matches: a-naya, from a-, "not", and naya, "conduct, policy", means bad management or misconduct, and an-aya, from an- and aya, "good fortune", means an evil course, ill luck or adversity. We could not find the popular senses in Monier-Williams or Apte, so they appear to be modern meanings attached to the name rather than the word's dictionary sense. Families choose it mainly for its short, gentle sound.
