Aniket (अनिकेत) comes from Sanskrit a-niketa, "houseless, homeless", formed from a-, "not", and niketa, "house, dwelling". The word is best known from the Bhagavad Gītā (12.19), where Kṛṣṇa describes the devotee dear to him as one who is the same in praise and blame, silent, content with whatever comes, aniketa and steady in mind. Commentators read aniketa there as freedom from attachment to a fixed home rather than as hardship. Indian name lists today often give Aniket as "lord of all" or link it with Shiva. Monier-Williams gives no such sense, so this appears to be a modern meaning that has grown up around the name rather than the word's original sense.
