Arivu (அறிவு) is the Tamil word for knowledge and wisdom, formed from the verb aṟi-, "to know". The Tamil Lexicon of the University of Madras lists knowledge, wisdom, understanding and learning among its senses, together with intelligence, and cites the Tirukkuṟaḷ (couplets 61 and 429) for them. The Kuṟaḷ prizes this quality highly and gives a full chapter, Aṟivuṭaimai, "the possession of knowledge", to it. Name lists give Arivu as "wisdom" or "intelligence", in line with the dictionary. It is a Tamil name used mostly for boys, and the same word begins longer names such as Arivazhagan and Arivarasu.
