Arihant (अरिहंत) is the Jain form of Sanskrit arhat. Monier-Williams derives arhat from arh, "to deserve", and gives it as worthy, venerable and respected, and among the Jains as an Arhat, a superior divinity. In Jainism an Arihant is a soul that has become omniscient and free while still living in the body, worthy of worship and the first of the five beings honoured in the Namokar Mantra, "Namo Arihantanam". Jain tradition explains the Prakrit word as ari, "enemy", and hanta, "slayer": one who has destroyed the inner enemies of anger, pride, deceit and greed. Both readings are long established, and the name is used in Jain families.
