Elizabeth meaning
Elizabeth is a Christian and international girl's name of Hebrew origin.
God of the oath; from El, God, and shaba, to swear
Elizabeth comes, through Greek Elisabet, from the Hebrew name Elisheba (אֱלִישֶׁבַע). Strong's concordance builds it from El, "God", and shaba, "to swear", and glosses it "God of (the) oath"; the Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon gives "God is an oath" and Thayer's "my God is my oath". In the Old Testament Elisheba is the wife of Aaron (Exodus 6:23). In the New Testament Elizabeth is the wife of the priest Zacharias and the mother of John the Baptist, and all nine mentions of her come in the first chapter of Luke. Baby-name lists usually give "God is my oath", which agrees with these sources. The name has many short forms, among them Eliza, Elsa, Beth and Lisa.
