Gayatri meaning
Gayatri (गायत्री) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, गा, it is a Makar rashi name (Dhanishta nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
A Vedic metre; the sacred Gayatri verse; a goddess
Gayatri (गायत्री) is the name of the most revered verse in the Vedas. Monier-Williams describes gāyatrī first as an ancient metre of twenty-four syllables, usually three lines of eight, and then as the particular verse in that metre, Ṛgveda iii.62.10, beginning tat savitur vareṇyam. It is addressed to Savitṛ, the sun as the source of life, and Brahmins recite it at their morning and evening devotions; for that reason it is also called Sāvitrī. The verse is personified as a goddess, the wife of Brahmā and mother of the four Vedas, and the name is also given to Durgā. Baby-name lists call it a sacred hymn or the "mother of the Vedas", matching the dictionary. In the south it is often spelt Gayathri.
