Gnanavel meaning
Gnanavel (ஞானவேல்) is a Tamil boy's name.
Spear of wisdom: ñāṉam "wisdom" + vēl "spear"; Murugan's lance
Also used to mean: Lord Murugan
Gnanavel (ஞானவேல்) joins ñāṉam, "wisdom", the Tamil form of Sanskrit jñāna, with vēl, the spear that is Murugan's emblem. The Tamil Lexicon defines vēl as a spear or lance and links it, probably, to the verb vel-, "to conquer". In Tamil devotion Murugan's vel is the spear of wisdom that cuts through ignorance, so the name means "the spear of wisdom" and stands for Murugan himself, as name lists say. It is used mainly in Tamil Nadu. Bearers include the film director T. J. Gnanavel and the producer K. E. Gnanavel Raja.
