Godavari meaning
Godavari (गोदावरी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, गो, it is a Kumbh rashi name (Shatabhisha nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The river Godavari of the Deccan; 'granting water or cattle'
Also used to mean: sacred river
Godavari (गोदावरी) is the great river of the Deccan, which rises at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik and crosses Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to the Bay of Bengal. Monier-Williams records godāvarī from the Mahabharata and Ramayana and explains it as "granting water or cattle", from go, which can mean both. In the Ramayana Rama, Sita and Lakshmana live beside the Godavari at Panchavati, now part of Nashik, and the Kumbh Mela at Nashik is held on its banks. Godavari is a traditional Marathi girls' name.
