Gomati meaning

Gomati (गोमती) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, गो, it is a Kumbh rashi name (Shatabhisha nakshatra) in the North Indian table.

Name of a sacred river; rich in cattle

Gomati (गोमती) is the feminine of Sanskrit gomat, "possessing cattle, rich in cattle". In the Ṛgveda gomatī can mean "a place abounding in herds of cattle", and it is already the name of a river that falls into the Indus. Monier-Williams also records another Gomatī flowing into the Ganges, named in the Mahābhārata, the Harivaṃśa and the Rāmāyaṇa. Today's Gomati, or Gomti, is a tributary of the Ganges in central Uttar Pradesh that flows past Lucknow. The dictionary adds a Vedic hymn called Gomatī, recited in atonement for killing a cow. Baby-name lists usually give "name of a river", and some add "full of water", which is not a dictionary sense. In south India the name is often spelt Gomathi.
