Urvashi meaning
Urvashi (उर्वशी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, उ, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
'widely extending'; the dawn personified as an apsaras, wife of Purūravas
Urvashi (उर्वशी) is the most famous of the apsaras, the celestial nymphs of Indian myth. Monier-Williams derives her name from uru, "wide", and aś, "to pervade", so "widely extending", and explains her as the dawn personified as an apsaras. Her love story with the mortal king Pururavas is told in a dialogue hymn of the Rigveda and in the Shatapatha Brahmana, and Kalidasa retold it in his play Vikramorvashiyam. A later legend, not in the dictionary, says she was born from the thigh (ūru) of the sage Narayana. Indian name lists give Urvashi as "celestial nymph", matching the dictionary.
