Ishita (इशिता) is usually read as Sanskrit īśitā, from the root īś, 'to rule'. Monier-Williams defines īśitā, also īśitva, as superiority or supremacy, one of the eight attributes of Śiva, citing the Mahābhārata and the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, and Apte calls it greatness, one of the eight siddhis. The popular senses 'mastery' and 'superiority' follow directly from this. Many name lists give 'desired' instead. We could not find that sense in the dictionaries: the look-alike iṣita means 'moved, sent' or 'quick', not 'desired', so 'desired' appears to be a modern meaning that has grown up around the name. The usual Hindi spelling has a short first i, while the dictionary word has a long ī.
