Ismat meaning
Ismat (عصمت) is a Muslim girl's name of Arabic origin (Urdu usage), also used for boys in Iran.
Protection, preservation from sin; chastity, purity
Ismat (عصمت) is the Urdu form of Arabic ʿiṣma, from the root ʿ-ṣ-m, "to hold back, protect". Lane's lexicon defines ʿiṣma as defence or preservation, above all God's preservation of a person from what would destroy him, and of the prophets from sin. Steingass' Persian dictionary adds chastity and purity, which is the everyday sense of ʿismat in Urdu. Name lists give "purity" or "chastity". The best-known bearer is Ismat Chughtai, the fearless Urdu fiction writer.
