Naqiya (نقیہ) is the Arabic naqiyya, the feminine of naqī, "pure", from the root n-q-y, "to be clean". Steingass's dictionary gives naqīya as pure or clean. The boys' form Naqi was a title of the tenth Shia Imam, ʿAlī al-Naqī, which gives the name a Shia association. Name lists give Naqiya as "pure" or "blameless", which matches the dictionary. It is used by Muslim families in India and Pakistan.
