Jagjit meaning
Jagjit (ਜਗਜੀਤ) is a Sikh boy's name of Punjabi origin, also used for girls.
One who conquers (jīt) the world (jag)
Jagjit (ਜਗਜੀਤ) joins jag, the world, with jīt, victory. The Mahan Kosh traces jag to Sanskrit jagat and gives it as the world and its people, and jīt as victory. In Sikh thought the phrase has a famous inward twist: in the Japji on Ang 6, Guru Nanak says that whoever conquers the mind conquers the world, ਮਨਿ ਜੀਤੈ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤੁ. Name lists render Jagjit as conqueror of the world, and Sikh lists add the Japji's sense of conquering the world of the mind. The best-known bearer is the ghazal singer Jagjit Singh.
